#17 – The Tale of a Spotless Lady Beetle

Alisha Towers - 17 Spotless Lady Beetle

Once upon a time, there was a lady beetle named Abigail who didn’t have any spots. In fact, Abigail was so spotless everybody thought that she was just an ordinary beetle. And this didn’t sit well with Abigail at all. Even though Abigail copied everything the other lady beetles did, no one would take her seriously until she had earned her spots.

You see, lady beetles earn their spots from doing genuinely nice things. For each genuinely nice thing they do, they earn one spot. Some lady beetles earned their spots by helping the older lady beetles do things like crossing the road or mowing their gardens. Other lady beetles went out and helped in the village by keeping the leaves clean or picking up rubbish left by other lady beetles.

Even though she tried very hard, Abigail had not yet earned any of her spots. She would head out do-good missions with her friends but she would always come back spotless. Confused, Abigail would ask her parents why she was the only lady beetle who couldn’t earn her spots. “Do you know WHY lady beetles do the good things that they do?” her parents would ask.

“To earn our spots!” Abigail would say.

“Well, then there is your answer.” Was their confusing reply

It seemed odd to Abigail that, even though they had earned their spots, they were still happy to be outside doing work that they didn’t really need to be doing. “Why are you not inside relaxing or playing in the park? You have all of your spots so surely you have everything you need!”

“This is why you do not have your spots, Abigail. One day you will understand.”

One day, Abigail was outside cleaning the leaves in the garden with her friends when she accidentally slipped off the leaf and fell down to the ground. Abigail was unable to get her wings out on time and hurt two out of her six legs so badly that the doctor said she had to stay home in bed for two whole weeks. Abigail was very sad but did what the doctor asked her to do.

During the next two weeks, Abigail had many visitors who helped her do all of the things she used to be able to do on her own very easily. They helped her by getting her dinner ready, keeping her warm and even washing her feet! Every time someone would help her, Abigail would stop them to ask why they were being so nice when they didn’t have to be.

“How does it make you feel when we help you Abigail?” one of her friends asked.

“Well, I feel lucky to have friends who will help me, but I wish I could do all of these things without your help,” she replied.

“You should not feel bad, but remember that you cannot do everything on your own and that we are stronger when we help each other.”

After the two weeks had passed, Abigail was ready to join her friends in helping the lady beetle village once again. This time, she remembered all of the help she had received and how it had made her feel. She picked up a single piece of rubbish and thought about how nice it felt to do a little bit that meant a lot, and a single black dot appeared on her shell.
